But when you throw people together who come from starkly different backgrounds and cultures- from Americans who precede anything negative with three nice comments to French, Dutch, Israelis and Germans who get straight to the point ("your presentation was simply awful"); from Latin Americans and Asians who are steeped in hierarchy to the Scandinavians who think the best boss is just one of the crowd- the result can sometimes be disastrous. Even with English as a global language, it's easy to fall into cultural traps that endanger careers and sink deals.

This book is probably most useful to someone with interest in either managing international teams or having a starting point in understanding intercultural differences. The information covered a wide range of cultural factors but assembled it in a clear, simple manner. Meyer discusses the varying characteristics of many cultures, roots of cultural developments, and how to effectively navigate challenging situations in international business. As a US citizen in Germany for the past five years, the biggest takeaways were learning the details behind each culture's deep-rooted influences from philosophy, education, law, etc.; and her advice for managing intercultural teams.
Fun stuff! A quick, relatively easy yet fairly intellectually stimulating read.
