Summary

The Dark Tower I: The Gunslinger by Stephen King is a fantasy novel and the first novel in the Dark Tower series. The story revolves around Roland Deschain, the last gunslinger who is chasing his rival the man in black. On his pursuit after the man in black, Roland meets a farmer called Brown and his speaking bird Zoltan. The town preacher Sylvia tells Roland that she has been impregnated by the man in black with a demon. The entire town turns against Roland and he has to kill everyone. His mule is found dead and he sets on his journey on foot.

Roland meets Jake Chambers, a young boy who died in his own parallel universe. Roland hypnotizes Jake to know about him. Roland and Jake encounter with a demon who tells them that now that Roland is with Jake, the man in black controls their fate. Slowly, Roland starts feeling vulnerable as he becomes close to Jake and is getting attached to him. Roland again has an encounter with an oracle spirit to know more about the man in black. He is told that he will shortly meet the man in black again but Jake will not survive the ordeal if Roland continues on his quest for the dark towers.

When Roland finally meets the man in black, Jake falls and dangles from the tracks above a deep pit. Roland has to choose if he wants to save the boy or continue in his pursuit of the man in black. The story of Roland’s choices and what unfolds after that forms the remainder of the novel.

The author details the character of the protagonist- Roland Deschain and helps the readers understand the character and develop a bond with him. The parallel universe and the setting of the storyline around the dark tower have been magnificently set up and described by the author. The character of Roland has been fleshed out by the author and various shades of his character are subtly put across to the readers.

The audiobook is an entertaining and scintillating read and the readers will be left wanting for more in the sequel.
