Summary
Never before on audio! A #1 national bestseller about a man who wakes up from a five-year coma able to see people's futures and the terrible fate awaiting mankind in The Dead Zone-a "compulsive page-turner" (The Atlanta Journal-Constitution).
If you're looking for a review about the story, then check out some on the service. It's King, so you can expect great writing and captivating characters.
However, what I really want to talk about is James Franco's performance as the narrator. The narrators play a big role in our choice of audiobooks, and I must say Franco was fantastic. He displayed a wide range of characters, and his laid-back and effortless style was very enjoyable to listen to. Some narrators tend to scream or go overboard with intense emotions, which makes me a bit uncomfortable (like the narrator for "It," for example), but Franco hit the right balance.
I highly recommend this audiobook! We need more talented actors who know how to tell a story narrating for the service. It's a real treat!
I'm not sure if Stephen King has a love-hate relationship with Maine.
I really wish I had read this book with others so we could have conversations about it as we progressed through the chapters.
In my opinion, James Franco didn't do a great job with character voices, but his regular narration voice was decent. It was quite amusing to see him use the same accent for a Polish person and a Vietnamese native speaker, and occasionally slip into the accent for a few syllables here and there.
I would suggest this to anyone who can handle a touch of darkness in their storytelling.
The title pretty much sums it up. James Franco did a great job with his performance, and I hope we get to hear more from him. However, the story itself didn't really stand out as one of King's best works. It felt like a combination of "Doctor Sleep" and "11/22/63," at least in certain parts. It just didn't capture my attention like "Joyland" or the "Mr. Mercedes" series did. That being said, I have to admit that it doesn't feel outdated. Even though it's set in the 70s, it doesn't feel like it's 40 years old. It's worth giving a listen, but I wouldn't prioritize it at the top of your list.
