  • The author is incredibly skilled at crafting language, but unfortunately, the plot lacks direction and progresses quite slowly. Additionally, there is a lack of depth when it comes to exploring the inner thoughts and emotions of the main character. The inclusion of random letters and uninteresting conversations contribute to a less-than-ideal reading experience. It's disappointing that the book lacks the clever dialogue, exciting events, scandalous moments, romantic elements, or captivating mysteries that one would expect. I've reached chapter 10, but I have to stop listening or else I might doze off while driving!
  • I absolutely adored this book! The characters in it are incredibly complex and each decision they make is far from being straightforward or black and white. Instead, they are portrayed as genuine human beings grappling with the choices that come their way. The writing is so heartfelt, bringing the characters and settings to life in a way that feels as vivid and real as a cherished photograph tucked in your wallet. I found myself yearning for each character to discover their own path and embrace their true selves, while also finding love and purpose along the way. It was a truly fulfilling experience to listen to this audiobook. And let me tell you, the narrator's performance was absolutely spectacular! They skillfully brought both male and female characters to life, maintaining their distinct voices throughout. It was an incredible performance that truly added to the overall enjoyment of the book.
  • In the midst of a summer filled with surprising discoveries, "The Essex Serpent: A Novel" takes its time to gradually reveal its story. It all kicks off with a quest to find the mysterious Essex Serpent, a fascinating creature that glides along the lake's surface. Opinions are divided: some are convinced it exists, while others dismiss it as a sham. However, as the story reaches its conclusion, the lines between reality and folklore become blurred, turning the lives of both believers and skeptics completely upside down.
  • I thought the story was well-written, although it wasn't quite what I had anticipated. The book covers a wide range of intense topics, including physical and sexual abuse, troubled children, attempted murder, infidelity, tuberculosis, heart surgery, superstition, unrequited love, homosexuality, suicide, and the contrast between wealth and poverty. It's quite a packed narrative, and I was expecting a bit more of a mystical tone. I've never come across a book that addresses so many issues in one story. It was a rather bleak reading experience for me, and I found it quite depressing.
  • The Essex Serpent: A Novel is a well-crafted and thoughtfully constructed book. It stands out in a time where many books revolve around discontent marriages, troublesome romantic partners, and the perils of dating. The female lead, if analyzed using contemporary labeling tendencies, might be deemed as having borderline narcissistic traits. However, she remains captivating despite her flaws. While she yearns for a world of intellect, she finds herself unable to resist taking advantage of the men who love her, even if she doesn't reciprocate their feelings. This captivating tale delves into the influence of cultural upbringing and the impact of beliefs grounded in vague reasoning and unsupported explanations. It presents an enthralling adventure centered around a sea-dwelling dragon, or perhaps something altogether different.
  • I really should have checked out the reviews before diving into this audiobook. I can't even remember the last time I was so relieved to finally finish one. Yeah, I pushed through until the end, but only because I'm one of those people who always feel compelled to finish what they start. The story was just so boring, monotonous, and didn't capture my interest at all. I actually found myself enjoying it when one of the characters faced some unfortunate events. Finally, something interesting! And can we talk about the narration for a second? I vaguely remember something about the main character's way of speaking in the book, but the narrator made both her and her son sound like they had a few screws loose. Sometimes it felt like she used the same voice for one character and applied it to another. I've skipped other audiobooks in the past because of bad narrators and opted to read the physical book instead. In this case, I really wish I had done the same.
  • This audiobook features female characters who are strong, intelligent, humorous, imperfect, and relatable. They receive affection and support, while also asserting their own limitations and principles. The language employed is beautifully poetic, and the narrative delves into the intricacies of science, religion, truth, love, and the multifaceted aspects of existence. It is an ideal package that leaves nothing to be desired.
  • I didn't manage to finish this book and will be returning it. By the time I reached chapter 15 out of 41, I was still waiting for something exciting to happen. On the bright side, I have to give credit to the narrator, as she did a fantastic job and would definitely listen to her again. However, I don't think I'll be wasting any more credits on this author in the future. The book is filled with numerous characters, making it difficult to keep track of them all. The author goes into lengthy and detailed descriptions of each character, even providing vignettes from their lives. Unfortunately, this results in an excess of atmospheric and character descriptions, with very little action to drive the story forward. Perhaps things pick up later on, but personally, I'm just not invested enough in the characters or the story to continue subjecting myself to boredom.
  • The plot of this audiobook is captivating and definitely worth investing time in, but unfortunately, the narrator's performance leaves a lot to be desired. One major issue is her tendency to speak in a soft, almost whisper-like tone, which requires constantly adjusting the volume. Additionally, whenever she tries to imitate a male character's voice, she suddenly raises her volume significantly and deepens her voice, which ends up being quite distracting and makes it difficult to fully engage with the story. After persevering for 2 1/2 hours, I eventually gave up on the audiobook. Thankfully, I stumbled upon a large print version of the book, giving me the chance to enjoy it through reading instead.
