The concept and potential of this book were fantastic. Nonetheless, the execution fell short. The characters and their dynamics felt contrived and uncomfortable. Numerous chapters were cringe-worthy due to their excessive cheesiness. Regrettably, this book resembled a poorly written Lifetime movie. Some may overlook the writing and get engrossed in the story, but I prefer authors who vividly depict scenes rather than summarizing them. It's disheartening to accurately anticipate the ending after just a few chapters. The author clearly needs to develop her writing skills before I consider purchasing any more of her books. Overall, it was a disappointing listening experience.
I had no idea about the expulsion of Chinese immigrants from the United States until I listened to 'The Girl Who Wrote in Silk'. The book also tells a few unexpected love stories, which show how surprisingly interconnected the world can be. It emphasizes the significance of cherishing our family and cultural backgrounds. There's so much to appreciate about this book!
The concept of this novel held a lot of potential, but it fell short due to two major issues:
1. The narrator was quite disappointing. Her overly enthusiastic tone became grating and irritating. She struggled to differentiate between male and female voices, resulting in a monotonous and nasal delivery. Additionally, there were some strange mispronunciations that stood out, such as "dint" instead of "didn't" and "woodunt" instead of "wouldn't". While these may be regional peculiarities, they were distractions nonetheless.
2. I couldn't help but notice an excessive reliance on unlikely coincidences to drive the plot forward. I counted at least 10 instances that seemed highly questionable. To avoid revealing spoilers, I won't go into detail, but by the third coincidence, I found myself rolling my eyes in disbelief.
Furthermore, the story became weighed down in certain sections by an overwhelming amount of unnecessary detail and overly introspective inner dialogue. The main character's questionable motivations for emotional decisions also detracted from the overall experience.
Although I managed to finish the book, I regret to say that it ultimately was not worth the effort. I cannot recommend it.

Aside from the main female character, who constantly endured hardships and lacked depth, there was only one genuinely decent person in the narrative, which left me somewhat disappointed. Although I appreciate the author's extensive research, I wish she had woven it into a more skillfully crafted narrative with well-rounded characters. It's unclear whether the narrator's portrayal was hindered by the melodramatic tone, but her overly precious narration made me eager for the book to conclude. I apologize, but I don't have better news to share.
I strongly suggest checking out this book. It's a gripping read from start to finish. I'm positive I'll revisit it multiple times. It would be awesome to see this story turned into a movie.
I really wanted to love this book, but I ended up being disappointed by the lack of depth in the characters, the predictable storyline, and the simplistic writing style. It might be better suited for younger readers, but as an adult, it didn't quite meet my expectations for serious fiction.
The performance of 'The Girl Who Wrote in Silk' was top-notch and had me hooked from start to finish. I love how this book sheds light on a part of history that often gets overlooked in our textbooks. The storyline is enjoyable, although at times, I felt that the emotional aspect was slightly exaggerated.
