Summary

Danny North knew from early childhood that his family was different—and that he was different from them. While his cousins were learning how to create the things that commoners called fairies, ghosts, golems, trolls, werewolves, and other such miracles that were the heritage of the North family, Danny worried that he would never show a talent, never form an outself.

  • I hadn't delved into Orson Scott Card's work before, but I figured I'd give this book a shot. It was quite a departure from the usual, blending elements of a thriller with a healthy dose of sci-fi and fantasy. The narrative cleverly weaves together two distinct tales, one set in our world and another in a forgotten realm of deities. Both storylines held their own intrigue, and I anticipate they'll merge into a cohesive narrative as the series progresses. The protagonist, a highly affable young lad, gradually discovers his latent magical abilities throughout the course of the book. It was a pleasure to witness his growth and development in wielding these newfound powers. The supporting characters were also quite likable, adding depth to the overall story. All in all, this series had a fantastic start that left me eagerly anticipating what comes next.
  • Are you a fan of Ender's Game? Curious about exploring the YA/fantasy genre? Fascinated by stories revolving around tricksters? Intrigued by the idea of mythological beings and humans coexisting in the modern world? Looking for a thought-provoking or thrilling read? Well, I strongly advise you to avoid this book. Seriously, folks, I've finally finished reading it, but throughout the whole experience, my face resembled that of someone tasting sour lemons or smelling rotten eggs. It was just a bizarre and strange book. Initially, I actually wanted to enjoy it, and I did until Danny ran away. Once he left the compound, he transformed into an incredibly unpleasant individual with sexual issues. This book contains numerous disturbing instances of underage sexual content, and I'm not talking about innocent scenarios like "Oh, he kissed a girl and it felt nice" or "Seeing her in a bikini made him feel strange." No, Danny is genuinely subjected to molestation by an older woman when he's around 12 years old, and shockingly, nobody seems to care. They even mock him for "liking" the attention from her, while simultaneously acknowledging how inappropriate and abusive her actions were. When you add in Danny's constant paranoia about pedophiles, his strange habit of taking off his pants whenever he gets in trouble (seriously, what's up with that?), and Wad's convoluted and unsettling sexual/reproduction storyline, this book becomes a veritable minefield of issues that even experts like Kinsey would find hard to unravel. I've been listening to this book at home in the evenings, and my husband has also joined in expressing his dismay at how terrible it is. So, rest assured, it's not just my personal dislike or sensitivity as a woman. This book genuinely has serious problems with its treatment of sex and puberty. *Regarding its suitability in the classroom, I wouldn't even consider introducing this to high school students out of fear of backlash from parents.
