Summary
Following the critically acclaimed success of Agatha Christie’s The Secret Adversary read by award-winning narrator Alison Larkin comes the very first Hercule Poirot mystery. Brilliantly read by James Warwick, star of the PBS Tommy and Tuppence Partners in Crime TV series, this delightful, authentic recording of Agatha Christie's first novel is followed by an exclusive interview with James Warwick and Alison Larkin.
It seems that The Mysterious Affair at Styles was the author's initial Poirot novel, and this is evident to some extent. Richard Armitage's performance is exceptional, and I believe I can sense a tribute to David Suchet, who is, by far, the finest actor to portray Poirot. It is quite entertaining, albeit occasionally stretching credibility, but that's just how Christie rolls.
I have to admit, the reason I chose to give this audiobook a shot was because of the narrator, Richard Armitage. I've seen him in movies and I absolutely love his voice, his accent, and his acting skills. Plus, I have fond memories of reading Agatha Christie novels back in high school, which was about 50 years ago. I recently watched the movie adaptation of one of her mysteries, Murder on the Orient Express, and that sparked my interest in listening to "The Mysterious Affair at Styles". Let me tell you, I was not disappointed.
Richard effortlessly transitions between different characters, making it easy for me to follow along and know who was speaking. I was completely engrossed in the story, listening to it every night before falling asleep and during my 1-2 hour walks outside. I thought I had figured out who the killer was, but I was well aware of Agatha Christie's ability to mislead readers, so I tried to reason why it would be the least likely suspect. The depth of her characters was impressive, and I found myself sympathizing with each one of them, even the seemingly villainous ones, right up until the end.
Normally, I lean towards science fiction and fantasy when choosing what to read, so a mystery isn't typically my first choice. However, Richard Armitage's narration drew me in, and I'm grateful to have rediscovered my love for Agatha Christie's work. Kudos to everyone involved in bringing this audiobook to life!
As a fan of Christie and a major Richard Armitage enthusiast, I had some reservations about whether his voice would suit Poirot. However, after a while, I completely disregarded the fact that it was Richard Armitage. The story was fantastic and the narration was flawless!
