Review

Released in 2015, The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah audiobook tells the story of all those women that stayed at home while men were fighting in battle. This does not mean that they suffered less than them; on the contrary, they were as brave as them and they had to take many hard decisions and make several sacrifices in order to survive and protect their families.

The story begins in 1995 with an old woman that is moving to a retirement house and who starts to remember her past. This is when we meet Vienna and Isabella and when their stories start to develop.

A positive aspect of the book is how different both characters are. The contrast in the personality and maturity of Vienna and Isabella is evident and it reflects in their decisions, their reactions and their relationships.

Even if this is an audiobook about WWII, the story is not extremely graphic. Yes, there are sensitive topics and hard scenes related to beatings, prison camps, starvation and sacrifice, but the author does not need to introduce graphic scenes every two pages to make us feel what the characters feel. The purpose of her style is to make us feel like we are living what the protagonists re going through, and we empathize with them.

The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah is sad and frustrating, but it is also full of hope, love and resilience. The story is brilliant and downloading the audiobook is definitely worth it.
