Summary
Homer's epic chronicle of the Greek hero Odysseus' journey home from the Trojan War has inspired writers from Virgil to James Joyce. Odysseus survives storm and shipwreck, the cave of the Cyclops and the isle of Circe, the lure of the Sirens' song and a trip to the Underworld, only to find his most difficult challenge at home, where treacherous suitors seek to steal his kingdom and his loyal wife, Penelope. Favorite of the gods, Odysseus embodies the energy, intellect, and resourcefulness that were of highest value to the ancients and that remain ideals in out time.
The audio quality of 'The Odyssey' was seriously lacking and so distorted that it became a major distraction. This is definitely not what I would have expected from a reputable company like the service.
I wanted to delve deeper into Greek mythology, so I was glad to stumble upon this translation of 'The Odyssey' that was both accessible and uncomplicated. What caught my attention even before the story began was the hour-long essay that provided valuable context and explanations about the translation. It even included intriguing discussions about the characters. The narration was enjoyable, with Danes' voice evoking genuine emotions. However, there was a certain element that I can't quite pinpoint that prevented me from giving it a perfect score of 5 stars.
