Summary
Ceony Twill arrives at the cottage of Magician Emery Thane with a broken heart. Having graduated at the top of her class from the Tagis Praff School for the Magically Inclined, Ceony is assigned an apprenticeship in paper magic despite her dreams of bespelling metal. And once she’s bonded to paper, that will be her only magic…forever. Yet the spells Ceony learns under the strange yet kind Thane turn out to be more marvelous than she could have ever imagined—animating paper creatures, bringing stories to life via ghostly images, even reading fortunes. But as she discovers these wonders, Ceony also learns of the extraordinary dangers of forbidden magic. An Excisioner—a practitioner of dark, flesh magic—invades the cottage and rips Thane’s heart from his chest. To save her teacher’s life, Ceony must face the evil magician and embark on an unbelievable adventure that will take her into the chambers of Thane’s still-beating heart—and reveal the very soul of the man. From the imaginative mind of debut author Charlie N. Holmberg, The Paper Magician is an extraordinary adventure both dark and whimsical that will delight listeners of all ages.
The author's talent for creating vivid settings is impressive, although the storyline and conversations lack depth. I desired greater character interaction, yet found myself immersed in the detailed descriptions of the surroundings instead.
An intriguing perspective on magic. The narrator's energetic and lively performance may not appeal to everyone, but it didn't bother me personally. I plan on listening to the remaining books in the series as they are conveniently short and available for free through Kindle Unlimited.
The plot is solid. Tucked away within a captivating tale are numerous themes that explore the complexities of life, including love, hatred, grief, decision-making, and living with the consequences of our choices. I was so engrossed that I ended up listening to it twice in a row. The initial listen was driven by my eagerness to unravel the next series of events, while the second time allowed me to catch subtle nuances and develop a richer appreciation for the narrative. Amy McFadden's narration is exceptional, and I've definitely added her to my list of preferred audiobook narrators.
This audiobook offers a fantastic exploration of witchcraft and sorcery, presenting a unique perspective on the journey of a young woman as she transitions into adulthood. It delves into the transformation of a skilled individual and teaches valuable lessons about not hastily judging others, as everyone is complex and diverse. There's even a touch of budding romance, adding an extra layer of charm.
