Summary

Drawing on previously unpublished eyewitness accounts, prizewinning historian Donald L. Miller has written what critics are calling one of the most powerful accounts of warfare ever published. Here are the horror and heroism of World War II in the words of the men who fought it, the journalists who covered it, and the civilians who were caught in its fury. Miller gives us an up-close, deeply personal view of a war that was more savagely fought-and whose outcome was in greater doubt-than one might imagine. This is the war that Americans on the home front would have read about had they had access to the previously censored testimony of the soldiers on which Miller builds his gripping narrative.

  • "The Story of World War II" is actually a pretty decent book. The sheer number of personal accounts from individuals who experienced the war is truly extraordinary. It's worth giving it a go just for those stories alone. However, it does tend to present a somewhat simplified version of WW2, relying heavily on the personal narratives to keep the reader engaged. There are a couple of instances where the way the information is presented might raise some doubts about the historical accuracy. It's not blatantly incorrect, but it does leave a few loose ends. Overall, it's an enjoyable read for those interested in gaining insight into one of the pivotal events that have greatly influenced our modern world.
  • I really enjoyed reading this book, it was incredibly fascinating and educational. Moreover, the way the information was organized and presented was very well thought out and logical.
  • This book was so good that I would definitely give it another listen, and I probably will. I thought I already had a good grasp on this era, but this book gave me some fresh perspective and unveiled some facts that completely took me by surprise.
