Summary

In The Truth about Muhammad, New York Times bestselling author and Islam expert Robert Spencer offers an honest and telling portrait of the founder of Islam-perhaps the first such portrait in half a century-unbounded by fear and political correctness, unflinching, and willing to face the hard facts about Muhammad's life that continue to affect our world today. Spencer details Muhammad's development from a preacher of hellfire and damnation into a political and military leader who expanded his rule by force of arms, promising his warriors luridly physical delights in Paradise if they were killed in his cause. He explains how the Qur'an's teaching on warfare against unbelievers developed, with constant war to establish the hegemony of Islamic law as the last stage.

  • You sometimes come across a book that could have easily been left untouched. If you're not from America and possess a scholarly understanding of Muhammad, this book might prove to be overwhelming. However, if you are an American who enjoys politics, this book will definitely cater to your interests. Nevertheless, I personally found it to be heavily one-sided. My mind often found itself disengaging while attempting to listen to this audiobook.
  • This book provides a lot of insightful information about the origins of Islam. It delves into intriguing details about Mohammad's background and his selection as the prophet. Moreover, it explores the reasons behind the divisions among major sects, focusing less on modern mainstream Islam. The book emphasizes the similarities between Islam and Christianity, which many Muslims may not openly acknowledge. If you're seeking to comprehend the mindset of Islamic radicals, this book will certainly be beneficial.
  • This book has garnered mixed reviews, with some expressing offense from the Muslim community and apologists. Nevertheless, the author takes care to draw references exclusively from esteemed texts and speakers within the Muslim world. Instead of presenting isolated excerpts from the holy book without context, the author provides a comprehensive portrayal of the individual in question. It seems that the main issue lies with individuals who are reluctant to acknowledge the true nature of Muhammad, as they seem to prefer falsehoods.
  • I'm a Muslim by birth, but I consider myself agnostic. Every religion has its ideals, but religious individuals often fall short of living up to them. The way Islam has been misrepresented is astonishing. It's unfair and misleading to judge Islam solely based on the actions of terrorists. That's like claiming Timothy McVeigh speaks for all Christians...
  • I think I've purchased more than 60 books from this service so far. I should definitely review more of them on this website. Robert Spencer is one of the most valuable authors on this platform. Before I started using this service, I bought and listened to the cassette tape edition of Spencer's "Islam Unveiled: Disturbing Questions About the World's Fastest Growing Faith" and it was amazing. I've noticed that just like with "Islam Unveiled," there are a few one or two-star reviews here on "The Truth About Muhammad" from people who either didn't seem to listen to the audiobook or only reviewed one audiobook on this website. Now, let's talk about Robert Spencer. I've read three good biographies of Muhammad, including Martin Lings' "Muhammad," which is available on this service. I recommend it, although unlike Spencer, Lings' biography is more of a defense of the prophet's life. Muhammad, unlike Jesus and Moses, was a warrior-king, similar to King David, although perhaps more violent. Of course, there may be some who disagree with this point. Reading a biography that delves into the violent exploits of a warrior-king may not be the most exciting experience, but in the case of Muhammad, it is a must-read because he was and still is such a significant historical figure. Robert Spencer is a scholar on Islam, whether you agree with his conclusions or not. I cannot stress enough how much I recommend Spencer's books to subscribers of this service. All of them are worth checking out.
  • A biased Christian author has successfully captured the essence of the founder of Islam in "The Truth About Muhammad: Founder of the World's Most Intolerant Religion." The book relies on Islam's holy scripture as primary sources, focusing on the perceived events and teachings sanctioned by religious scholars rather than the factual occurrences. One notable aspect discussed is the treatment of women, where the emphasis lies not on Muhammad being ahead of his time, but rather on how his treatment of women serves as a precedent for current practices according to Islamists. The perception of Muhammad by religious believers holds significant importance. It is worth noting that Muhammad's God bears striking similarities to the deity portrayed in the Old Testament of Christianity and Judaism, written approximately 700 BC. However, Muhammad's teachings, presented in a back-to-basics monotheistic approach, illustrate the notion of "My God is Stronger than Your God." For example, the author explores the story of Muhammad and the adulterous woman, shedding light on his teachings and the varying attitudes of those involved. Muslims reading this book may find it necessary to closely examine Muhammad's actual teachings. A troubling realization is that it may inadvertently justify terrorism in the minds of devout Muslims, which poses a significant concern. Moderates often use religion to promote family values, while extremists are the ones who genuinely believe and act upon it.
