Summary
National best-selling author Frank Peretti has been hailed the undisputed master of supernatural thrillers. The New York Times calls him "the dean of the genre." His books have sold more than nine million copies and The Visitation alone has sold more than half a million. The small town of Antioch, Washington is a hotbed for spiritual activity. Burned-out minister Travis Jordan has been replaced by a charismatic man who looks and behaves like Christ. Suddenly, the town is abuzz with reports of miracles and religious sightings. But Travis believes the new minister is a false messiah and senses the ominous presence of pure evil. Filled with thrilling action, The Visitation is also the author's most personal work. Says Peretti, "It is a searching of my own heart ." Narrator Richard Ferrone delivers a rich, animated performance.
I gotta say, 'The Visitation' is one hell of a novel, man. It's all about Christ and it really makes you think, ya know? The author really nails it with the relatable insight and the genuine depth of emotions.
I didn't really know what to expect, but I have to say, this audiobook was not enjoyable for me. As someone who studied religion in college, I'm usually a fan of religious storylines, even if they don't align with my own beliefs. The promise of a religious story with a supernatural twist had me instantly sold!
However, getting through this book was a real struggle. It was by far the slowest-paced book I've ever experienced. I probably should have given up after the first hour, but I was determined to find some redeeming qualities. Unfortunately, I didn't find any.
Now, I don't want to knock this book purely based on my own biases. So, I'll just say this: if you're a Christian, chances are you'll really enjoy this book. But for me, it felt like someone was relentlessly shoving faith into my ears with a heavy cast iron pan. It made me feel like an uncomfortable child being forced to go to Sunday school again. So, if you're looking for a fun and exciting supernatural book, this one might not be for you.
The narration of 'The Visitation' was quite enjoyable. The initial two-thirds of the book did a commendable job in elucidating the genuine notions of religious disillusionment, offering an honest assessment that resonated with me. However, towards the end, the author delved into the realm of supernatural fiction, highlighting the ultimate purpose of religion, regardless of its moral alignment.
I was absolutely blown away by the numerous unexpected surprises and changes in direction throughout the plot of this captivating tale. I was on the edge of my seat, eagerly anticipating the conclusion and what would unfold next. The author's talent is truly extraordinary, and I am eagerly anticipating diving into more of his exceptional works.
I absolutely loved 'The Visitation'! It's an amazing and captivating tale that resonated with me, especially because of my background in the church. The book's message really hit home for me.
I just read my first book by Peretti and enjoyed it enough to give another one a shot. It started off a bit sluggish, but it picked up and was definitely worth sticking around for. Since I've had experience with various religions and churches, I could really connect with his depictions of beliefs and attitudes.
Speaking of the narration, Taylorsville is easily one of my top favorites.
The Visitation is a captivating story that explores the conflicts between individuals, their inner struggles, and the triumph of righteousness over darkness. It's a truly engaging read that brings a lot of satisfaction.
I absolutely loved 'The Visitation' from start to finish. The narration was terrific and the characters were truly captivating. I'm already itching to give it another listen.
I remember taking a whole week off from work just so I could devour "This Present Darkness" in the '80s. I actually had the chance to meet Frank at a CBA convention. I relate a lot to "Travis" in many ways: older, wiser, but a bit more melancholic. I know how easy it is for Jesus to get lost in the chaos of all the "church stuff", so this story really resonated with me. Peretti is more than just a Christian author, he's a true master storyteller. Excellent work, Mr. Frank.
Tom Taylorson is also a true master of his craft. It's hard to believe that all those distinct voices and characters came from the same person. He also did a fantastic job with Peretti's "The Oath". His incredible skills as the voice actor for the Joe Gunther series have spoiled me for any other narrators.
You can't go wrong with either of them. If I had ten thumbs, they would all be pointing "up!"
