Summary
It has been twelve years since a dark, murderous figure stalked the alleys and courts of Whitechapel. And yet, in the summer of 1900, East London is still poor, still brutal, still a shadow city to its western twin. Among the reformers is an idealistic young woman named India Selwyn-Jones, recently graduated from medical school. With the help of her influential fiance--Freddie Lytton, an up-and-coming Liberal MP--she works to shut down the area's opium dens that destroy both body and soul. Her selfless activities better her patients' lives and bring her immense gratification, but unfortunately, they also bring her into direct conflict with East London's ruling crime lord--Sid Malone.
I absolutely love this book, it has become one of my all-time favorites! The amount of research that must have gone into it is mind-blowing. There were so many significant historical moments that were seamlessly integrated into the story, I couldn't even keep count. Jill Tanner, the narrator, is absolutely incredible. She brings the characters to life in such a remarkable way, it's truly a historical masterpiece. I'm eagerly looking forward to listening to The Wild Rose to continue the series.
This book, 'The Winter Rose,' is a captivating tale set during the turn of the century. It brings together elements of a fairytale with delightful surprises and unexpected events that keep readers hooked. From cunning villains to benevolent angels, and from love to heartbreak, the story beautifully intertwines all these elements, making it almost impossible to stop reading. I came across The Tea Rose over a decade ago and it quickly became one of my all-time favorites. Ms. Donnelly truly has a knack for captivating storytelling. Recently, I added it to my personal collection, and just when I thought nothing could surpass it, I purchased The Winter Rose. Let me tell you, I was dead wrong. The Winter Rose is an absolute masterpiece, delivering an enthralling narrative that grabs hold of you and doesn't let go. It brings back beloved characters from the first book while introducing fascinating new ones. I am eagerly looking forward to diving into The Wild Rose, which continues Seamus and Willa's story. If you have a thing for historical fiction, this three-part saga is as good as it gets. I was completely hooked and couldn't stop listening.
The author has put in so much effort in crafting a captivating story throughout the countless hours, but unfortunately, it concludes in an abrupt and incredibly dissatisfying way. It's going to take quite a while before I am willing to fully immerse myself in the next book. This disappointment truly lingers!
I had a great time delving back into the world of Fiona, Joe, and their families with "The Winter Rose". However, I still find the narrator to be quite lacking in certain aspects.
The characters have this uncanny ability to keep crossing paths in various countries. The plot is captivating, although it may stretch the bounds of plausibility.
I picked up the initial book based on the author's reputation, but they suggested another one.
After listening to the sample, I purchased the book without realizing it was part of a series. I became so engrossed in the first book that the plot left me yearning for more.
These books are incredibly captivating; you just can't help but wonder what will unfold next. The storyline is fantastic, and the audio quality is top-notch.
I had a blast with this story, there were so many unexpected turns. I'm a fan of stories that make the characters stick with you even after finishing it.
This book was as good as the first. It's a nice long listen with great narration. I will be getting the last of the trilogy next. I hate to see it end. I've become invested in these characters.
