Summary

Jack Ryan has only just moved back into the Oval Office when he is faced with a new international threat. An aborted coup in the People's Republic of China has left President Wei Zhen Lin with no choice but to agree with the expansionist policies of General Su Ke Quiang. They have declared the South China Sea a protectorate and are planning an invasion of Taiwan. The Ryan administration is determined to thwart China’s ambitions, but the stakes are dangerously high as a new breed of powerful Chinese anti-ship missiles endanger the US Navy's plans to protect the island. Meanwhile, Chinese cyber warfare experts have launched a devastating attack on American infrastructure. It's a new combat arena, but it’s every bit as deadly as any that has gone before. Jack Ryan, Jr. and his colleagues at the Campus may be just the wild card that his father needs to stack the deck. There's just one problem: someone knows about the off-the-books intelligence agency and threatens to blow their cover sky high.

  • The novel 'Threat Vector' explores a chilling scenario where a covert agency in China manages to hack into crucial American defense and intelligence networks. This breach not only compromises U.S. military communications and intelligence agents, but also gives the Chinese military control over satellite-guided drones and missiles. As tensions rise, the U.S. is forced to shutdown these technologies to prevent further damage. The story also delves into other captivating plotlines, but given recent real-life events, the cyber hacking aspect of the book was particularly unsettling and believable. Fortunately, the supersecret American agency known as The Campus, which has been secretly infiltrating American defense and intelligence networks, becomes aware of the threat. The novel takes readers on a thrilling ride, featuring intense battles on land, sea, and air, as well as gripping psychological confrontations. The question of who will emerge victorious keeps readers hooked until the very end. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, especially because it brings closure to several storylines that have been building up in Clancy's previous collaborations, "Dead or Alive" and "Locked On." If military and espionage thrillers aren't your cup of tea, I would recommend opting for the abridged version of 'Threat Vector' as the unabridged version can be occasionally tedious. Lastly, Lou Diamond Phillips delivers an excellent narration, adding another layer of enjoyment to the audiobook. While Scott Brick is a seasoned professional, his return as the narrator after several entries performed by LDP was a disappointment.
  • I'm not sure about the exact extent of Mark Greaney's involvement in this book, but it seems like he had a significant role. Without a doubt, 'Threat Vector' is the best Tom Clancy novel in a long time. I've been let down by Clancy's recent works, so I had some hesitation about reading this one. However, since I thoroughly enjoyed Greaney's 'The Gray Man' series (which is fantastic, by the way), I decided to give it a shot... and boy, am I happy that I did! The story is outstanding, and Lou Diamond Phillips delivers an exceptional performance.
