Summary
When Admiral William Halsey selected Destroyer Squadron 21 to lead his victorious ships into Tokyo Bay to accept the Japanese surrender, it was the most battle-hardened US naval squadron of the war.
This book is fantastic, the narration is top-notch. It offers a comprehensive examination of the accomplishments and misfortunes, both positive and negative, of the Fletcher Class Destroyers during World War II.
The positive
The accounts shared by the members of DESRON 21 in this book are incredibly fascinating and the author does a great job of telling their stories. If you're someone who is really into World War II in the Pacific, then this is definitely worth reading or listening to just for that.
The negative
The author clearly has a strong affection for destroyers and wanted to create an engaging narrative. However, there are a few instances where important details are omitted and some questionable "facts" are presented, which could lead readers who are not well-informed to draw incorrect conclusions about the strategic and operational intent behind certain events. It seems like these omissions and inaccuracies were mostly done to enhance the overall flow of the subject matter. It's not a major issue if you're primarily interested in the stories of the destroyer men.
Overall
This book is a good choice if you're looking for an enjoyable read, although it may come across as a bit too enthusiastic for a history book.
