Summary

As a teenager and young man, Justin Lee felt deeply torn. Nicknamed "God Boy" by his peers, he knew that he was called to a life in the evangelical Christian ministry. But Lee harbored a secret: He also knew that he was gay. In this groundbreaking book, Lee recalls the events--his coming out to his parents, his experiences with the "ex-gay" movement, and his in-depth study of the Bible--that led him, eventually, to self-acceptance.

  • This book is absolutely fantastic, written by Justin Lee who is both gay and a devout Christian. He shares his personal journey, from his upbringing to becoming the Founder and Head of the Gay Christian Network. What really stood out to me was his honest exploration of the struggle Christians often face when approaching the LGBTQ+ community. Instead of resorting to judgment, Lee emphasizes the need for grace and understanding. He bravely delves into his own experiences and the internal conflict he felt as he reconciled his gay identity with his Christian faith. As someone who follows Christ and identifies as heterosexual, I found myself relating to both the positive and negative responses towards the LGBTQ+ community. Although I may not agree with Lee's theological stance, I appreciate the path that led him there. One of the aspects I admire most is his efforts to bridge the gap between the Church and the LGBTQ+ community, promoting open and respectful dialogue rather than condemnation or hostility. Regardless of where you stand in this ongoing conversation, I highly recommend reading or listening to this book. It offers valuable insights and perspectives that are well worth your time.
  • As someone who has constantly felt divided between these two realms, Lee's book offers me a sense of optimism and empowerment. It addresses something I've longed to articulate to my fellow Christians and members of the LGBT community, but have struggled to express. Justin accomplishes this task admirably.
  • I really enjoyed how well the audiobook version of 'Torn: Rescuing the Gospel from the Gays-vs.-Christians Debate' was narrated. It was incredibly easy to listen to, and the author did a fantastic job of presenting his points in a way that I wouldn't have grasped if I had just read it myself. While I have some disagreements with the author's moral theology and his insistence on using the term "gay," despite acknowledging that it holds different meanings for different people, causing confusion in discussions, I appreciate that he highlighted the importance of Christians being more loving. Even though I don't agree with all of his conclusions, this book has prompted me to reflect on my own personal approach to this issue. As a Catholic, I am grateful that we don't have to grapple with the same interpretation issues on Scripture as our non-Catholic brothers and sisters. Our position, known as side B, is something I wish the author had delved into more deeply. Peace in Christ.
  • My buddy recently came out to his folks, and man, it didn't go well. He's in his late 20's and grew up in a super Christian household. His old man dropped a bomb on him, saying he's not welcome in their crib anymore. It hurt me to the core, just imagining hearing that from a parent. My friend asked me to check out this book and give him my two cents before he hands it over to his parents. It's crazy how Justin's story mirrors what he's going through. I'm just hoping his folks actually take the time to read this book and change their perspective on their own flesh and blood.
  • Listening to this powerful audiobook, I couldn't help but shed tears. It's a truly genuine and emotionally charged story that truly touches the heart. The author skillfully narrates his own experience, invoking a sense of compassion and understanding. By embracing the acceptance of others, we also learn to accept ourselves and ultimately draw closer to God's desires for us.
  • I'm really happy that I got the chance to listen to this audiobook. Even though I'm a straight, married Christian, I believe it's crucial to personally delve into the biblical truth regarding homosexuality. It was fascinating to hear Justin's personal journey and his interpretation of the Bible verses that touch upon homosexuality. I'm particularly curious about his perspective on Ephesians 5 (the verse that's often referenced when discussing biblical marriage) and the story of Adam and Eve, and how those verses shape his understanding of biblical relationships. Since these topics weren't explored in this book, I felt there was a missing piece. Nonetheless, I would definitely recommend this book to others who are interested in exploring this subject.
  • I was really blown away by Justin Lee's book 'Torn: Rescuing the Gospel from the Gays-vs.-Christians Debate' as an openly gay pastor. It meant a lot to me that he bravely shares his own personal journey, as it has the power to encourage and uplift others who are navigating similar challenges.
