I absolutely dug the storyline of this book, and man, was I so hooked on the plot that I devoured it in just a couple of days. But, there were a few hiccups that bothered me. Usually, I'm cool with a book leaving some loose ends, but this one left too many unanswered questions. It would have been dope to have a complete story that left me with just a couple of lingering mysteries, rather than dragging out a single puzzle across a whole trilogy. Also, the character development was lacking, man. I felt like we could have gotten so much more from them. On the flip side, the mystery itself was killer, and I couldn't tear myself away from it. Loved that the main character, Stevie, had a love interest, but it didn't overshadow the main plot, which was rad. And can we talk about the representation in this book? It was absolutely on point! I'm all about authors who give props to POC and the LGBTQ+ community, and Maureen Johnson definitely nailed it.

The writing in this book is top-notch, no doubt about it. However, it's important to note that it's only the first part of a larger story. The ending chapter leaves readers hanging, with mysteries still unresolved. While it does offer a crucial clue for cracking the case, it's a bit disappointing that it doesn't provide a complete resolution. It might have been better marketed as a book that is part of a series rather than a standalone novel.

I devoured this book in just three sittings, absolutely loved it! Can't wait to dive into the next installment.

I really enjoyed this book, mainly because of how it skillfully weaved two intriguing stories together. It effortlessly shifted between the captivating events of the 1930s and the present day. I noticed that some people in the comments weren't fond of the cliffhanger ending, but personally, I didn't mind it at all. In fact, it gave me the perfect excuse to give the book a re-listen before diving into the second book. The only downside for me was the narrator's pronunciation. It felt like she made the words sound a bit choppy and overemphasized, which kind of got on my nerves. However, I must admit that she did a commendable job when it came to voicing the male characters. Despite this issue, I would still highly recommend this book, preferably in its physical form so you don't have to contend with the narrator's quirks.

Apologies for the slow start, but things definitely pick up after a couple of chapters. The author skillfully navigates between two different time periods and effectively blends the two storylines together.
