Summary
In this riveting landmark autobiography, award-winning actor Louis Gossett, Jr., masterfully transports us to 1840s New York, Louisiana, and Washington, DC, to experience the kidnapping and twelve-year bondage of Solomon Northup, a free man of color. Twelve Years a Slave, published in 1853, was an immediate bombshell in the national debate over slavery leading up to the Civil War. This enhanced edition with an accompanying Collector’s Extra is based on the research of Dr. Sue Eakin, the nationally recognized authority on Solomon Northup who spent a lifetime authenticating his story.
You can't even begin to imagine how powerful this story is. The resilience and courage of Black Americans in the face of adversity moved me to tears. It's a reminder to never forget our roots and to always keep pushing forward.
I feel fortunate to have grown up in a country where freedom is valued. It is disheartening to listen to a firsthand account of slavery that provides an authentic perspective. This audiobook evokes a deep sense of sadness, while also instilling a great amount of respect and admiration for our enslaved ancestors and the individuals who played a crucial role in bringing an end to the institution of slavery.
As far as I know, this happens to be the solitary book that Northup penned, and it's quite a shame because he has a talent for writing. Easily one of the most remarkable books I've ever had the pleasure of listening to. It offers a truly remarkable perspective on the institution of slavery.
