Summary

In a collection of original essays, the venerated television journalist, Dan Rather, celebrates our shared values and what matters most in our great country, and shows us what patriotism looks like. Writing about the institutions that sustain us, such as public libraries, public schools, and national parks; the values that have transformed us, such as the struggle for civil rights; and the drive toward science and innovation that has made the United States great, Rather will bring to bear his decades of experience on the frontlines of the world's biggest stories, and offer readers a way forward. After a career spent as reporter and anchor for CBS News, where he interviewed every living President since Eisenhower and was on the ground for every major event, from the assassination of John F. Kennedy to Watergate to 9/11, Rather has also become a hugely popular voice of reason on social media, with nearly two million Facebook followers and an engaged new audience who help to make many of his posts go viral. With his famously plainspoken voice and a fundamental sense of hope, Rather has written the book to inspire conversation and listening, and to remind us all how we are ultimately united.

  • I gotta say, I don't doubt Mr. Rather's sincerity in this book. It's clear that he has seen a lot and his views are based on solid experience. However, I do feel like his perspective is a bit lopsided. My main issue with the book is that he criticizes politicians but seems to put journalists on a pedestal. Sure, he provides plenty of examples of how the press has exposed political scandals - that's true. But he fails to hold his own profession accountable for their performance. Especially TV news, which has become more about entertainment than serious reporting. And let's be real, the only people who seem to take TV news seriously are the journalists themselves and maybe their sponsors. Politicians may be afraid of the TV press, but that doesn't mean the press always gets it right. Overall, the book definitely gets you thinking, but it's hard to ignore the arrogance that I remember from Dan Rather's TV days.
  • Once I pressed play on this audiobook, I found it impossible to hit the pause button. The way Mr. Rather presents the material is top-notch and it really reignited my deep affection for our nation. I'm truly grateful for the opportunity to listen to these thought-provoking essays, as they truly echoed my own sentiments.
  • This book is a fantastic read for these complex times. It served as a reminder that our nation has faced challenging moments in the past and has always managed to come together. The question remains: will we once again rise to the occasion and find unity? In my opinion, the answer is a resounding yes.
  • This audiobook offers valuable perspectives and the mentality of a genuine patriot. By accompanying the author on this short adventure, we are given the opportunity to contemplate our history, the current state of affairs, and what lies ahead. The overall execution is commendable.
  • This audiobook, "What Unites Us: Reflections on Patriotism," is a truly inspiring and patriotic choice for your Fourth of July listening. It offers a profound and contemplative analysis that provokes new perspectives I've never considered before. Moreover, it presents captivating storytelling and shares real-life experiences that truly resonate.
  • I admire Mr. Rather's endeavor to bring together a country that is deeply divided with this book. It couldn't have come at a better time! Although he makes an attempt to be impartial, which is rare for opinion pieces in the public eye, Mr. Rather does present certain historical and contemporary issues in a manner that favors liberal policies and undermines or discourages conservative policies. Considering Mr. Rather's background, this bias is understandable, but it is also disheartening. What our nation truly requires are more unbiased, fair-minded, and patriotic thinkers who truly comprehend the perspective of the average American.
  • I shelled out some cash for the audio version of 'What Unites Us: Reflections on Patriotism' along with the Kindle edition, but to my utter disappointment, the audio only covers two measly chapters. Talk about feeling ripped off! I was under the impression that I had purchased the complete book.
  • Being a teacher of American history, I frequently ponder about experiencing the events of the not-so-distant past. This book has given me a valuable perspective, and I'm truly grateful for it.
