Summary

For fans of Old Yeller and Shiloh, Where the Red Fern Grows is a beloved classic that captures the powerful bond between man and man's best friend. Billy has long dreamt of owning not one, but two, dogs. So when he's finally able to save up enough money for two pups to call his own—Old Dan and Little Ann—he's ecstatic. It doesn't matter that times are tough; together they'll roam the hills of the Ozarks. Soon Billy and his hounds become the finest hunting team in the valley. Stories of their great achievements spread throughout the region, and the combination of Old Dan's brawn, Little Ann's brains, and Billy's sheer will seems unbeatable. But tragedy awaits these determined hunters—now friends—and Billy learns that hope can grow out of despair, and that the seeds of the future can come from the scars of the past. • This is a really interesting and captivating story that takes us back to early American times and gives us a glimpse into the vastly different lives people lived back then. It touches on themes of faith in God, the strong bond of a tight-knit extended family, and the harsh reality of hunting and skinning raccoons, who were really no match for humans with dogs. I personally enjoyed reading this book, although I couldn't help but cringe and hold my breath during the scenes depicting the killing and skinning of raccoons, as I have a soft spot for these adorable creatures. It was evident that the raccoon skins were being sold for fur and coonskin caps. It's really heartbreaking to think about killing such beautiful and cunning animals, but that was the reality of the time. I see it as a historical aspect and can only hope that it's no longer happening. I was quite surprised that this is considered acceptable for children, but then again, I'm not a parent or teacher. If you're able to enjoy a story about a boy and his dogs hunting and killing raccoons, then this book is for you. The narrator did a fantastic job bringing the story to life. It definitely made me shed tears for the raccoons, the dogs, and that era in history. But it also made me reflect on the darker side of humanity and our inclination for finding joy in killing.
