Summary
In the aftermath of the brutal murder of his father, Richard Cypher encounters a mysterious woman, Kahlan Amnell, in his forest sanctuary. She seeks his help...and more. His world, his very beliefs, are shattered when ancient debts come due with thundering violence.
To start off, I have to say that this book isn't the most original and it lacks a certain level of elegance in its writing. However, the book is well-organized and manages to keep you engaged with its clever plot twists, which is quite impressive considering its length. The characters, although a bit too perfect at times, are still likable and easy to care about. I'm not an avid reader of science fiction and fantasy, but as a Tolkien enthusiast, I didn't find myself too distracted by the similarities to other books in the genre. Overall, if you're looking for a straightforward and entertaining listen that will keep you hooked for several hours, this is a solid choice. I found myself genuinely captivated on multiple occasions and I'm now diving into the second book.
Now, the one major issue I have is with the narrator. He's just about passable, putting in a B- effort to prevent too much irritation. I've certainly come across worse narrators, but he's definitely no Sir Ian McKellen!
I purchased this book without realizing it served as the foundation for 'The Seeker' TV series. Initially, it grabbed my attention and it wasn't until I reached chapter 2 that I made the connection. The characters are solid and well-developed, although the descriptive passages and emotional portrayals can become tiresome. Unfortunately, I don't think I'll be investing in another book from this series.
